At the Academy of Music, we believe that making music matters. Since 1991, we have been dedicated to providing high-quality music education to students in Norfolk, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach.

Our History

The Academy of Music was established in 1991 with a simple yet profound goal: to make music education accessible to everyone in the Hampton Roads area. Over the years, we have grown into the region's only independent non-profit community music school, accredited by the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts. Our commitment to excellence in music education has allowed us to provide instruction to countless students, fostering a love for music that will last a lifetime.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide the benefits of music education to the residents of Hampton Roads, regardless of their financial situation. By offering private lessons, group classes, and outreach programs, we strive to make music education available to everyone who seeks it.

Our Services

At the Academy of Music, we offer a wide range of services designed to meet the diverse needs of our students. From private lessons on a variety of instruments to group classes and outreach programs, we are dedicated to providing the highest quality music education in the region.

Private Lessons

Our private lessons offer one-on-one instruction with some of the best musicians in the area. Many of our faculty members perform with prestigious organizations such as the Virginia Symphony, Virginia Opera, Virginia Arts Fest, and Virginia Chorale. By learning from these experienced professionals, students can gain a deep understanding of their chosen instrument and develop the skills necessary to excel in their musical pursuits.

Suzuki Strings

The Suzuki method of string instruction is a popular approach that focuses on learning music in the same way that we learn our mother-tongues, through listening. This method emphasizes the development of ear training, discipline, and sensitivity, allowing students to grow into confident and expressive musicians. Our Suzuki strings program is designed for students of all ages and skill levels, providing a supportive and nurturing environment in which to learn and grow.

Early Childhood Music

Our early childhood music program, Prezuki, is designed for young children who are just beginning their musical journey. This program introduces students to the basics of music, including rhythm, melody, and form, in a fun and engaging way. By fostering a love for music at a young age, we hope to inspire a lifelong appreciation for the arts.

Band-Together

Band-Together is a unique program designed for students who wish to learn music in a group setting. This program provides an opportunity for students to work together, learn from one another, and develop the skills necessary to perform as a cohesive ensemble. By participating in Band-Together, students can gain valuable experience in teamwork, communication, and musicianship.

Scholarships
