Empowering students to be their own teacher.

DC Youth Orchestra Program's mission is to empower young people to transform their lives through music and community. Our organization is committed to providing diverse and inclusive music education to students of all backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles. For over 60 years, DCYOP has been an integral part of the Washington, D.C. community, with a rich history of excellence and achievements.

Our Philosophy

At DCYOP, we believe that every child deserves access to high-quality music education, regardless of their background, socioeconomic status, or ability. We strive to create a supportive environment where students can develop as whole human beings and artists. Our programs are designed to meet students where they are, providing individualized support and instruction to ensure every child's success.

Our Services

DCYOP offers a range of programs and services to meet the diverse needs of our students. Our programs include:

  • Ensembles: We offer nine different ensembles, catering to students of all skill levels and musical backgrounds. From beginner string and wind ensembles to advanced full symphonic orchestras, our ensembles provide a supportive and stimulating environment for every student to grow and develop.
  • Beginner Lessons: Our group lessons are designed for students as young as 4 who are new to playing an instrument. With the guidance of a trusted adult, students learn fundamental skills and techniques, preparing them for graduation into one of our beginner ensembles.
  • More Opportunities: In addition to our main-site programming, DCYOP offers additional training and performance opportunities to exceptional students, especially for young artists of color and students who may need extra support to pursue their musical studies at the highest levels.

Our Team

Our dedicated team consists of eight full-time administrative members, ten board members, nine conductors, and more than twenty teaching artists, all committed to creating and sustaining empowering and life-changing experiences through music. Our team shares the passion and dedication to our mission, working together to provide a supportive and inclusive environment for every student.

Our History

DCYOP has a rich history of excellence and achievements, dating back to 1960. We have had the privilege of touring 24 countries, playing for US presidents and diplomats, and working with esteemed musicians such as Aaron Copland, Lorin Maazel, Mstislav Rostropovich, Marvin Hamlisch, Gustavo Dudamel, Yo-Yo Ma, and Kevin Deas. Our alumni include renowned musicians, scientists, writers, and politicians, including Daniel Foster, Principal Viola of the National Symphony Orchestra; Toyin Spellman Diaz, Oboist in the Imani Winds; Chris Royal, Professor of Music at Howard University; John McLaughlin Williams, Grammy Award-winning conductor; and many more.

What Makes Us Different

At DCYOP, we prioritize every child's unique journey, welcoming every student into an appropriate level ensemble or program. We empower our students to nurture their musical, mental, physical, and social growth, providing programming that is affordable and accessible to all. We cultivate a spirit of collaboration and inclusivity, recognizing the transformative power of music education in shaping the future of our world.
