Nurturing the love of music, one note at a time.
Dr. Nathan Groot is a dedicated violist and music educator with a passion for sharing his love of music with others. As a music instructor at the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts, he brings his wealth of experience and knowledge to inspire the next generation of musicians. His own musical journey began in his early childhood with the blessings of a supportive and encouraging family. At the University of Georgia, where Dr. Groot earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree, he delved deeply into the world of viola performance under the guidance of Professor Maggie Snyder, culminating in a dissertation titled "A New Graded Repertoire: A Pedagogical Analysis of Works for Viola by Underrepresented Composers." This research reflects his commitment to expanding the repertoire for viola and highlighting the contributions of underrepresented voices in the classical music world.
Prior to his time at the University of Georgia, Dr. Groot honed his skills at Miami University, earning a master's degree in viola performance under the tutelage of Professor Mary Harris. His musical foundation was laid at Tennessee Tech University, where he received both his bachelor's degree in viola performance and pedagogy, mentored by Professor Idalynn Besser. Through these academic experiences, Dr. Groot developed a comprehensive understanding of viola performance techniques, historical context, and pedagogical approaches.
Throughout his career, Dr. Groot has graced countless stages as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral violist. Notably, he was invited as a guest soloist for the Sofia Music Weeks Summer Festival in Sofia, Bulgaria in 2018, performing alongside the Sofia Sinfonietta at the behest of composer Yovcho Krushev. This international performance opportunity solidified his reputation as a talented and sought-after violist. His passion for contemporary music led him to the world premiere of Emily Singleton's "In Our Walk" in 2021, a work that gained recognition as an honorable mention in the VIOLA2020 competition.
My Passion for Underserved Communities
Dr. Groot's commitment to making music accessible extends beyond his own practice. He recognizes the systemic barriers and inequalities that exist within the world of music education and seeks to create opportunities for all individuals to experience the joy of making music. In 2020, he joined the founding team of the non-profit organization, Lift Music Fund. This organization is dedicated to addressing the financial disparities that often hinder access to quality music education for underprivileged children.
Dr. Groot's personal journey with music education ignited his passion for supporting those who might not otherwise have access to enriching musical experiences. Having received music instruction from a generous member of his community during his youth who provided free lessons, he understands firsthand the transformative power of music education and the profound impact a mentor can have on a young musician's life.
Your Musical Journey Begins Here
Dr. Groot's enthusiasm for teaching shines brightly through his in-person and virtual private studio, where he nurtures the talents of violists and violinists of all ages. Beyond individual instruction, he is dedicated to fostering a love of chamber music, serving as a faculty member and chamber coach at the Tennessee Tech Summer Music Institute for three summers. As director of the New Horizons String Ensemble in Athens, GA from 2019-2022, he guided student musicians in creating a vibrant and supportive musical community.
